Are You a Candidate?
If you're satisfied with the size of your breasts but have noticed sagging or a loss of firmness and shape, a breast lift alone may be the best choice for you. You may also be a good candidate if you:
- Have breasts that have flattened or elongated as the result of breastfeeding, weight loss, heredity, or other factors
- Have nipples that fall below the crease beneath your breasts
- Have enlarged areolas that point downward
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that enlarges the breasts with implants. In the United States, breast augmentation patients may choose between saline or silicone implants in a range of sizes, shapes, and textures. Though breast augmentation will not provide a significant lift to sagging breasts, it can create a slightly perkier appearance on breasts that show only minimal sagging. You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you:
- Wish to enlarge naturally small breasts
- Would like to replace breast volume that was lost following breastfeeding or weight loss
Breast augmentation and breast lift are 2 distinct surgeries that may be performed together on select candidates. During each consultation, Dr. Nolan takes plenty of time to fully explain his patients' options for undergoing one or both of these fulfilling procedures.
Breast lift and breast augmentation at our Mt. Kisco practice are both performed while the patient is under general anesthesia. Incision location varies from patient to patient and may be placed around the nipples (periareolar), across the breast crease (inframammary), or even in the armpit (transaxillary). Dr. Nolan ensures each of his patients is fully informed about the specifics of her surgery, including incision location, well in advance.
Once the incision has been made, Dr. Nolan creates a pocket, called a breast capsule, to insert the implant either over or under the pectoral muscle, depending on the patient's anatomy and desires. If a breast lift is performed, Dr. Nolan lifts and reshapes the underlying breast tissue to ensure the breasts sit higher on the chest. He also repositions the nipple and areola to the center of the breast. Excess breast skin may be removed to create a smooth contour.
Your Recovery & Results
It's very important to follow Dr. Nolan's postoperative instructions carefully to facilitate proper healing and ensure that your results will last for many years. Dr. Nolan provides you with specific instructions on how to care for yourself following surgery.
Whether you've had a breast augmentation, breast lift, or both, some swelling and bruising is a likely result. These symptoms are temporary, and discomfort can be managed with prescribed medicines. Dr. Nolan advises his breast enhancement patients to sleep upright and on their backs for several days following surgery, so it's a good idea to make sure your bed or favorite recliner has plenty of comfortable, supportive pillows. Avoiding certain other activities, such as lifting your arms, can promote a good outcome.
Most breast enhancement patients are able to return to work after about a week, although you may require more time off if you have a physically demanding job. You'll wear a specialized bra to support your breasts as they continue to heal.
One of the best things you can do to maintain the beautiful results of your breast augmentation or lift is to maintain a steady weight. Significant weight loss or gain can alter the appearance of your breasts, and revisionary surgery may be needed. If you're thinking of becoming pregnant after your breast augmentation or lift, be sure to discuss your plans with Dr. Nolan. He'll work with you to develop a reasonable timeline that gives you results that work with your lifestyle.
