Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that gets rid of stubborn pockets of fat that don't go away with diet and exercise. You might experience undesirable fat cells in your upper arms, beneath your chin, or in your abdomen, back, love handles, thighs, hips, or other problem areas.

What are the benefits of liposuction?

Some of the many benefits you can experience with liposuction at The Center for Dermatology Cosmetic & Laser Surgery include:

  • Slimmer overall appearance
  • Better body contours
  • Less cellulite
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Tighter skin
  • Fewer fat bulges
  • Fewer fat cells

There’s minimal downtime after liposuction, so you can resume a normal routine after a short period of recovery.

Is liposuction right for me?

To find out if you’re a candidate for liposuction at The Center for Dermatology Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, your specialist reviews your medical history and completes a physical exam to assess areas of concern.

They discuss your desired outcome before personalizing a cosmetic treatment plan that’s right for you. You should be at or near your ideal body weight prior to liposuction to achieve the best possible results.

What should I expect during the procedure?

Follow your provider’s instructions prior to undergoing liposuction at The Center for Dermatology Cosmetic & Laser Surgery. They may ask you to stop taking certain medications or not eat or drink anything the morning of the procedure.

Your provider numbs the treatment area and gives you medicine to make you relax or fall asleep. They make an incision, insert a thin, tube-like device into areas containing excess fat pockets, and suction out excess fat cells. Finally, they close the incisions and take you to a recovery area.

What happens after liposuction?

You can expect tenderness, bruising, and swelling at the treatment area after undergoing liposuction. Follow all of your post-care instructions. Take medications as directed and wear compression garments if your provider asks you to.

Avoid strenuous exercise until your doctor says you’re ready. Over time, as the swelling goes down and your body heals, you can expect tighter, slimmer body contours with fewer fat pockets.
