Dermal fillers are among the most popular cosmetic treatments in the U.S. In 2018 alone, over two million people received fillers of some kind, enjoying the benefits of smoother, rejuvenated skin. We hear a lot of questions about dermal fillers at our Westchester dermatology practice, especially from patients who are new to injectables. Some might feel nervous about what to expect during their first treatment and the results that follow.
Good news: There is nothing to fear from this safe, nonsurgical procedure. Our post will explain the before, during, and after of what a dermal filler session is like at The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery.
If you’re interested in having fillers injected, your first step is to schedule a consultation at our office. You can request one using our online form or by calling the practice. Our staff will set you up with a one-on-one meeting, during which you will have a chance to talk about your concerns, cosmetic goals, and desired results. To learn more about what you should know before trying dermal fillers, read our related blog post.
This is an open conversation to ensure you feel comfortable and confident about the process. Your doctor will be happy to answer any questions you might have. They may also take this time to narrow down specific fillers (such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®) that might best suit your aesthetic needs.
We advise arriving at the office 10 to 15 minutes early, so you can relax and finish any final paperwork. Once inside the treatment room, your provider will prepare you for the procedure. This involves sterilizing the surface of your skin and marking locations that the treatment will address. The provider will then begin a series of small injections targeting specific areas.
Any discomfort during this process is minimal, often being compared to the feeling of a bug bite. As this is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure, most people can return to work or home immediately after treatment.
Once treatment is complete, you might experience slight redness or some swelling at the injection site. This is a common, natural response. A cool compress provided by your provider can give some relief.
Results from the fillers can be seen nearly immediately. Over the next few days, as your body heals, your skin will reveal its new refreshed, youthful appearance. These results can last for up to 18 months, depending on the fillers used. You can return to the practice for a touch-up treatment as needed. The American Academy of Dermatology Association also offers helpful tips for getting better, longer-lasting results.
During this process, our practice is here to support you and help you feel as comfortable as possible. To see examples of what dermal fillers can achieve, browse our before-and-after gallery featuring our actual patients.
