Acne scars can be one of the most frustrating skin concerns to address, and unfortunately, they’re also among the most common. If you’ve struggled to visibly reduce your acne scarring with at-home skincare, you’re not alone. At my Westchester County dermatology practice, I offer several treatments designed to help with both pigmentation issues and uneven skin texture.
Read on to learn more about a few of the most effective treatments for minimizing acne scars.
Depressions in the skin associated with acne scars can be filled in or lifted with injectable dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®. Injecting very small volumes into these depressions raises them to be even with the surrounding skin so they are much less visible.
Dermal filler treatments are fairly quick. In fact, many people have them done over their lunch breaks. After a short series of injections, you’ll be free to return to your normal routine, though you may have some minor swelling. Depending on the formulation, fillers typically last between 6 and 12 months.

By stimulating collagen production, Fraxel creates more even skin texture and coloration. This laser treatment creates tiny channels in your skin, which activate the skin’s healing response. The result is smoother, younger-looking skin with visibly reduced scarring. One study showed a 47% improvement in skin texture just 3 months after treatment; you can also see how well it works in our Instagram post photos below.
Fraxel treatments take between 15 and 45 minutes and require a few days of downtime. I typically recommend 3 to 5 sessions spaced a few weeks apart. As collagen rebuilding gradually takes place over the following few months, you should notice your skin becoming brighter, softer, and more even.

Genius™ RF Microneedling
A deeper and more effective form of collagen induction therapy than traditional microneedling, Genius RF microneedling regenerates the skin to minimizes superficial scarring. Ultrafine needles penetrate the skin and deliver radiofrequency energy to the deeper structures, which spurs a natural healing process.
Treatments usually take about an hour, though this varies depending on the size of the treatment area. Your skin may look a bit pink and swollen for a day or 2 after your appointment, similar to the experience of a sunburn. Most people see the best results after about 3 treatments spaced a month or so apart. Some choose to touch up their results once a year to keep their skin as fresh and even as possible.
By peeling away damaged skin cells with varying degrees of aggression, chemical peels remove layers of scarring and reveal newer, healthier, and more even skin.
Recovery time varies depending on the peel. You may see improvements to your skin after a single session, but most people are happiest with their results after a series of 3 to 6 treatments.
