With the growing popularity of injectable dermal fillers, patients are asking us more and more about lip fillers at our Mount Kisco practice. Designed to increase fullness in the lips, these fillers require only minimally invasive injections and offer customizable results that can last for months.
In this blog post, we will provide an overview of the lip augmentation process, from determining if you are a candidate to experiencing the procedure to enjoying your final results.
Ideal candidates for lip fillers have naturally thin lips or are experiencing thin lips as a result of aging. They want to increase the volume of their lips and have reasonable expectations for their results. Because filler can be injected into specified areas of the lips, results are customizable and can be adjusted to best suit your unique needs. When you come in for a consultation, we will discuss your desired look and create a personalized treatment plan to create the best possible results for you.
The most commonly used lip filler product at our practice is JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC, which consists of hyaluronic acid. This filler, or whichever product your doctor recommends for you, is injected into your lips with a short, fine needle. The product contains a numbing agent called lidocaine to help increase your comfort, and we may also use a topical numbing cream. We may also give you a cold compress to help reduce any swelling or bruising.
Typically, the lip augmentation recovery consists mainly of swelling and bruising for the first few days. It’s best to avoid extreme heat or any activities that will cause a rush of blood to your face during this time—to make sure the product stays evenly distributed. After the recovery period, your results will develop and you’ll be able to determine whether you would like to make any final, subtle adjustments for optimal correction.
Depending on the filler used, your results may last from 6 months to 1 year before your body metabolizes the product. Occasionally, a patient may choose to have a small additional amount of filler injected at a touch-up appointment to optimize their results.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance, and in the very unlikely case that you don’t love your look, it can be dissolved with another injectable natural substance called hyaluronidase in a quick appointment. During your consultation, however, we’ll work closely with you to make sure we achieve your ideal results so this won’t be necessary. Many people find comfort in knowing this option is available, though it is very rare for our patients to feel anything less than thrilled about their new lips.
