Skin Care FAQs FAQs

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle: How it helps your skin.

Good skin care is more than using the right soap and moisturizer. Your lifestyle is important. Follow these lifestyle tips for healthier skin:

Healthy diet. Eat a skin friendly diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Drink plenty of water to help keep your skin hydrated.

Exercise. Exercising improves blood circulation, which may improve your skin's tone and color.

Sleep well. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep to avoid your skin looking puffy, lackluster and sallow.

Quit smoking. Smoking may cause your face to age prematurely.

Protection from the sun. Overexposure to the sun increases the risk of skin cancer. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and try to avoid direct sunlight.

Skin Care

Do you know where to go for treatment of your skin? What about your baby's skin? Is your skin as soft and young looking as you want it to be? Are you concerned about hair loss? Have you ever worried about skin cancer? Most likely, you and your family could use, or may need, help in one of these areas.

Your skin is the largest and most visible of the body's organs and one of the most complex because it interacts with many other organs. Its main purpose is to act as a shield protecting your insides from external stress: disease, infection and environmental factors, such as the sun. Your skin also plays an important part in your appearance. By taking care of your skin, you help it do its job and look healthy, too.

Most people, at some time or other, experience some kind of troubling skin growth or mark. These problems can be disfiguring, embarrassing, irritating, even painful. The best person to see about these problems is your dermatologist, because many of these afflictions can be either reduced or removed by simple dermatologic surgery or treatment with medications.

You may be tempted to solve skin problems by consulting friends or family, or by trial and error at home. However, because the condition of your skin is so important to your well-being, it's important to get the best advice, help and medical care possible for it. And for that kind of help, there's only one physician to turn to - the dermatologist.

Just as cardiologists are needed for heart problems or pediatricians for children's illnesses, a dermatologist is the one to consult for solutions to all your skin care needs.

Dermatologists are highly trained medical specialists, who are experts on all diseases and medical conditions of the skin, hair, and nails. They are skilled in surgery as well as the use of medications and can help in areas as diverse as cosmetics, anti-aging therapy and the treatment of diseases such as psoriasis or eczema.

Even if you have never had skin problems, it is a good idea to see a dermatologist as an adult. Nearly everyone will have some kind of skin problem in their lifetime. The skin's protective barrier can break down due to age, disease or other factors.

Your dermatologist can help you watch for the long-term effects of the environment, aging and disease and also help prevent skin problems. In fact, with skin cancer increasing today faster than any other form of cancer, many medical specialists recommend a yearly skin checkup by a dermatologist for every member of your family.
